Surrogacy is becoming increasingly common today. The reasons are many.
Indian Express, Kochi Tuesday 21 september

Aluva, Sept. 17: Surrogacy has become a common name among couples without children and among poor but healthy women ready to lend their utreuses to carrry babies of others. Unlike organ donation, the Surrogate mother carries the baby of other couple till delivery. In surrogacy the childless couple gets a child and simultaneously surrogate mother gets nourished food, proper medical care and handsome amount.

The number of childless couple is being increased alarmingly even when treatment like IUI, IVF, ICSI etc. fails often due to unhealthy uterus which does not allow the fetus to grow though healthy embroys are transferred.

Complications due to late marriages, change of lifestyle, lack of leisure time of working couples, new occupational environment like late night works in IT sector, living in far away places and different countries for employment, stress, obesyty, diabetics etc. play crucial role leaving many couples to lead desperate life without children.

In females, diseases of uterus like fibroid, uterine abnormalities, endometriosis, endometrial adhesions, congenital absence of uterus, pelvic infections destroying the pelvis, repeated abortions or medical problems contra medicating a pregnancy  can go for surrogacy said Infertologist Dr. Anitha Mani of Gyno Hospital. Women after hysterectomy, renal surgery, cardiac/liver or other major problems which make them unable to conceive, can also do surrogacy. Male infertility associated with female problems may also need in case of repeated ICSI failures, she added.

A new trend has also been fast emerging among women of high profile company executives, models, film actresses and professionals opting alternate facilities entrusting surrogate mothers to deliver their children as the former find it extremely difficult to spare few months for carrying their babies and deliver and undergo post delivery care.  Social cause like lack of time to take a break from their busy career is also likely to  become a common cause for entrusting surrogate mothers in delivering their children in future. Gay couples who want to have children often opt for surrogacy.

The childless couples were the happiest lot when IVF (Test Tube Baby) was introduced. But it was fournd later that many attempts for children through IVF were not successful compelling them to go for Surrogacy which is gaining momentum in the society.

Many European countries and the USA  have banned surrogacy. But in India, surrogacy is allowed. Steps are on to introduce new Laws to protect the rights of the child and surrogate mother, Dr. Anitha, a UK returned infertologist, added.

The biological parent desirous of having child can opt to transfer healthy embryos to a woman with healthy uterus (Surrogate Mother) who agrees to nourish and carry the child for 9 months till delivery.

Infertoligist Dr. Mani of Gyno IVF Super Specialty Center in Athani near Nedumbassery said that certain proceedures are followed for surrogacy treatment in the hospital. The couple could opt for surrogacy from a pool of willing women offered by infertologist; after counseling, medical screening and discussing about adoption.

In Gyno IVF Center, surrogate women are selected by following strict proceedure. They should be below 30 years and have one child early. They should by medically fit and healthy and have no history of genetic problems and familial diseases. She should be graduate with normal weight and satisfactory result in various Lab tests. Willingness of husband is essential, Dr. Mani said. A list of women who have undergone screening for surrogacy successfully is maintained in gyno ivf centre, he added.

After thorough screening, legal papers will be signed by both biological parents and surrogate mother and fix the time for treatment for IVF.

Many couple prefers the surrogate mother to stay in hospital till delivery but it is optional. The expense for the treatment and care of surrogate mother which varies in different cases will be met by the couple. The couple who wants the surrogacy should  be prepared to take any unexpected costs that might occur due to medical problems in pregnancy

The delivery of the surrogate is conducted by whichever mode and the birth of the baby is registered under name of biological mother. The baby is handed over to couple after birth and surrogate mother is given compensation. She has to be taken care of till discharge.

Dr. Anitha added that another new system of treatment, ‘Egg Donor method’ for childless couple due to unhealthy egg of wife was introduced recently by taking the sperms of the husband and mix with the egg of another woman and transfer the embryo to his wife’s uterus. In this case the attachment of the mother and the child would be thicker as she had to carry the baby for nine months supplying blood and oxygin to the embryo to grow.
